Unfortunately for Fumihiko, last night’s scandalous little “incident” with a certain kawaii seiyuu seems to have been a fluke. But maybe his luck is still turning for the best…?

Whoa, am I late or what? Sorry the blog has been dead lately, but there have been a lot of deadlines intensifying as March 1st has drawn near. Now that it is already March 1st, and I have met most of my deadlines, I should be free to update a lot more often. :) Thanks to those who still stop to read even though my episode reviews come out so late! Chu!
- Summary
When Fumihiko wakes up to find his cute little Aka gone, he heads on to work as usual, but pretty bummed out. He decides to use his “work is life” mantra to keep him focused and distracted on work and away from females (he also disappoints the lame female coworker who stood him up last night by telling her he has simply given up).
Excepting the worst as he seems to usually get, Fumihiko is surprised by his supervisor when he’s told that one of his ads is going to be produced and used. He is invited to the usual process of choosing the seiyuu for the ad’s cartoon mascot. (We can all see where this is going, right?)
At the seiyuu auditions, Aka winds up coming in to audition for the voice of the little tree/cat combination mascot, unaware that the ad is Fumihiko’s work. When she sees him at the auditions, she is surprised but pretends not to know him, which bums him out a bit more. Luckily for him, though, she winds up being the seiyuu selected for the job, meaning more connections between the two of them.
Sulking along home, Fumihiko is startled by Aka, who’s waiting for him at his apartment door. He learns she is going to continue staying with him, but she is adamant that they keep their relationship (platonic or not) secret from the people at the ad agency. Thinking this means more love-love time for Fumihiko, he tries to touch her but she freaks out and tells him, “Don’t get any ideas from last night!” and that it was a one-time thing. Too bad, so sad. Aka sleeps soundly while Fumihiko lies wide awake in sexual torture.
- Episode Review
The realism of the show is still strong, even if it is a little corny that Fumihiko happens to develop an ad that needs a seiyuu that Aka happens to be perfect for. It is still more probable than aliens turning a boy into a girl, a boy living with a sexy magus and knight, or a vampire girl falling in love with a human, though. Not that I don’t like those. But the realistic approach to REC combined with the usual humor and cute romance is what really attracts me to the anime.
I especially like the fact that Fumihiko and Aka have to hide their relationship from their coworkers. This will certainly add an element of intrigue to the story. I can imagine various possibilities for the two, such as employees hitting on Aka and her not being able to say she is involved with Fumihiko (since we know she WILL be), etc., etc. Makes for fun watching.
It seems like the controversy of casual sex has receded now that Aka has her wits about her. Unfortunately for Fumihiko, this series might be progressing along a more normal cute anime storyline route without tons of sex every night. This development doesn’t daunt me, however, because it is still realistic. Of course someone like Aka would regret her decision to sleep with a random guy. The entire setup seems natural enough, if you ignore the probability of a woman agreeing to continue to sleep at a strange man’s apartment just because hers burned down one night.
The couple pairing being a little strange (Aka seems so young and pretty next to the old overworked Fumihiko) is another thing that interests me, of course. It almost seems like a loli-pedo pairing. Just almost.
Short episodes are the best. Like Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora, the episodes can be packed with a lot of excitement and end way before viewers feel satisfied, so they crave for more. Though it is debateable how exciting that series is, since I find myself a little disappointed with it. But that’s for a Hantsuki review. :P
Maybe I should change the headings of “Episode Review” to “Commentary,” haha.

That’s for sure. I appreciate the pace and the overall “cuteness” of this anime, even if it seems…how can I put it, “calm”. I feel it’s somewhat “female-oriented”, and I put it inside _big_ quotes. It’s cute, nice, but not boring and predictable. No bloodshed, no “magical girl”, no fanservice, few action, but well-paced.I’ll follow this anime. And yes, the coupling is a bit strange but not SO much. The weirdness, and the strong point, of this show is that Aka is actually _living_ with Fumihiko. They’re a couple-wannabe. It’s anime with taste, in my book. Not earthshaking, but it’s really good in my book.Still lukewarm about the comedy parts, but it gets very good sometimes. Another booring “commentary” from yours truly ^_^, bear with it, ppl.

She’s 20, he’s 26. Please, send your dictionary back to the vendor for correction of the term “loli-pedo”.

>Chris:
When he was 20 she was 14, so that’s something to think about. Plus, as Jason has remarked, she looks and sounds 14.
But I actually didn’t say it WAS a loli-pedo pairing. I said “It almost seems like a loli-pedo pairing. Just almost.”
Comment by Saria — March 1, 2006 #
I think Saria makes a point, it’s ALMOST like a loli-pedo pairing. If we didn’t know about her age, how old would she seem to us? I’ll say 16 or something like this.
Luckily, she’s not submissive and it happens to be an interesting couple! (but was it some kind of reward sex then? That’s a bit weird…)
Oh and your commentaries are much more interesting to me than a review!
Comment by eurys — March 1, 2006 #
Oh c’mon, let’s say she looks a little younger and he looks a little older. 20 and 26 it’s a good age match, don’t you think? Loli pedo…isn’t even in question here (for once!), I think.
Comment by Wyk72 — March 2, 2006 #
Actually she is ALMOST necrophile because when she’s 80, he’s most likely already dead. Even if she was 16 that would hardly qualify as “loli-pedo”. Depending on your location sex might be illegal then but it’s rather common that 16 year olds prefer guys slightly over 20. Most anime characters look much younger, often almost child-like than they actually are but you already know that, don’t you?
Maybe you have watched too much anime but aside from the anime-watchers circle terms like “pedo” are not used that lightly. I suggest reading these:

>Wyk72: For the purposes of this series, it is an interesting match, but in reality, NO, 20 and 26 is NOT a good age match. 6 years is a big difference. A 26 year old would have been out of college and working already in the real world, and a 20 year old would be barely in the middle of college. When he was 20, she was 14. I think maybe once it gets to 26 and 32, it is a better match. 20 is extremely young.
>Chris: I know what pedophilia is and I don’t think labeling this as a near-pedo pairing is out of the question at all. I probably know more about pedophilia than anime and I am actually fascinated by the phenomenon. Have you read Lolita? I don’t think this anime is an extreme case or classifies as true pedophilia, but a 20 year old (especially one that looks/sounds 14) is still a baby compared to a 26 year old. Yes, in write-ups, I do exaggerate, because I can and it generates more controversy like this, haha.
And even if a 16 year old thinks a guy who is old enough to drink, smoke, and drive is cool, it doesn’t mean it’s a good or LEGAL match. A 16 year old is still below the “age of consent” in the U.S. even if they aren’t prepubescent, if you want to use your Wiki definitions.

…everyone is entitled of their own opinions, and I don’t want to start any fight, but, please consider that Aka, the girl we see here, is _working_ in the real world, just like Fumihiko. She’s not on college, from what I see. Saying that “when he was XX, she was XX”, pardon me, is not very consistent thinking. My mother was born in 1937, my father in 1926. They married when my mother was 21. I know married couples that are spaced 15 years in age. They don’t really have ANY connection with “pedo” stuff, AT ALL. So I, really, don’t see where your point is.When I was in college, some 17yrs-old girls used to hang out with people in their 30s.Honestly I don’t think they were seeing each other just for a cappuccino.

Well, where I’m from sex with 16 year olds is not illegal (unless the grown-up is the teacher, a tutor etc.) The US law is certainly puritan when it comes to sex. As far as I know, you may join the army and kill people before you are allowed to impregnate your girl friend. That tells a lot about morals, doesn’t it? Here you a considered an adult as soon as you’re 18. I don’t know the numbers for Japan though. 20 is not “extremely” young at all. Some people even have an own family at that age. It’s certainly a bit early but not uncommon. When you’re a teenager one or two years can really make a huge difference. When you’re about 20 age doesn’t matter that much anymore but it depends a lot on your life style. If you’re still in school at that age, you’re likely not fully grown-up in your mind. If you have a job, your own flat etc. you shouldn’t have a problem hanging out with people much older than you. Oh and once you’re a little older, many women even seem to prefer *much* older guys. Most older guys certainly like young girls - no doubt also because of the sexual attractiveness - but that has really nothing to do with “pedo”, it doesn’t come close even.
I haven’t read Lolita but I’ve watched the old b&w Kubrick movie. The girl was 14 or even younger IIRC and the guy was also much older. The comparison with Lolita seems to be a little far fetched in my opinion.
A 20 year old is still a baby? Sure, can happen but the vast majority certainly isn’t. I really wonder how old you are. Do you know any 20 year olds? Maybe there is a huge difference between different countries. Once you’re 14 you’re a (partially) liable for your actions and can be sued here. Of course special laws apply to children (in my country) but once you’re about 16 you’re considered a “little grown-up”. You may even smoke your lungs black at that age. Hardly something a baby would do.
It is always possible in a relationship that one of both mentality exploits the other one. That is independent of the age.
If fully understand that you made an exaggeration but even exagerations can be far off.

>Wyk72: I am aware of Aka and I have no problem with the pairing between them. I was just saying that in real life, I wouldn’t condone such an age difference. At least not in the U.S. I’m not trying to make a shot at anyone who married young or have a huge age gap, either. My grandparents are pretty far apart as well (almost 10 years), and they are fine. But the average marrying age in the U.S. has significantly increased since that time.
>Chris: Where are you from? Just curious.
I don’t think this is an issue of morals. I happen to be from a different political and social culture than you, obviously, so we will of course argue on how young is young and how old is old and where laws and limits should be drawn.
I personally think 20 is extremely young because I don’t believe people acquire adult maturity until age 25. Most of this has to do with whether people are in college or not, and I realize that. I know Aka isn’t in college and I have already said that in the context of this anime, they do make a good couple and the age gap is not nearly as existent as it is in real life.
But it just so happens that in the U.S., the culture dictates “college before money,” just because our system doesn’t usually work well for kids who start working right after high school. So in most cases, a 20 year old here would be in college.
And I do know 20 year olds, and my peer age bracket is in the 20s. I know how immature or mature they can be. :P
I really do think it has more to do with the cultures we are raised in. I know in other countries like Vietnam, people are expected to marry and start a family when they are 18. In the UK, people start working at 16 and they can make a successful life without going to college. Here, it just isn’t that early or easy. You are really expected to go to college if you want to make a good living, and most people start REALLY working at age 25.
Oh, and I wasn’t trying to make a point with Lolita, I was really just asking out of curiosity, since I loved that book. :)

I’m from Germany. I certainly agree that people in their 20s still have to learn a lot and will reach further stages of maturity. However, I don’t think that you’re too young for a mature relationship at that age. I would almost assume you overestimate the maturity of people in their late 20s or 30s. It differs from person to person anyway. Something that really makes people more mature is having children.
Comment by Chris — March 2, 2006 #
I agree with Chris: it differs from person to person.
> But it just so happens that in the U.S., the culture dictates “college before money,”
Here in Italy, the trend now is college-university until 35 - and possibly, live with your parents until they/you die ^_^. Marriage is almost seen as a disgrace… o_O
No sightings of ANY money in the last 3-4 years…for almost everyone here(T_T)…I have this feeling we’re a little on the bankruptcy side as a nation, but maybe it’s just myself. This Euro has slaughtered our economy, I think, and we have gas at 1.24€/lt (1.15€/lt for diesel).
Comment by Wyk72 — March 2, 2006 #
>Chris: Yeah, I believe it differs from person to person and there is always an exception to the rule, but I would kill any 26 year old that tried to get involved with my 20 year old daughter. And I’ve been raised with the idea that as long as you are dependent on your parents in any way (them helping pay for you to live or go to college), you must follow their rules. Unforunately, most people are dependent at least until after undergraduate school. Meaning around 24 is when you can finally be thought of as an adult and can make decisions entirely on your own.
I guess it really is different from country to country. I think it’s interesting that both of you speak fluent English, though. Is it really that universal? I’ve never been to Germany or Italy. Have you been to the U.S.?

[…] I was searching for new poll ideas when this little debate sparked in the comments of one of my REC reviews between Chris, Wyk72, and I, after I made a stretch and related the couple to a loli-pedo pairing. Though the poll question doesn’t really involve REC itself, I thought it would be interesting to know. So. Lolicon and pedophilia? How do you feel? We are talking, full-blown, Lolita 12yr-40yr combination. If you think it is wrong or right, then, in what contexts? Do you believe it is just sick in general, that pedophiles are just misunderstood, that it is okay in anime and fantasy contexts but not real life, or what? I’m really interested to hear the responses. I know how abq from Lolitron would vote. […]

Thanks for the flowers but I’m afraid I don’t “speak” fluent English. My written English is much better because I’m used to communicate in English through e-mail, IRC, forums etc. It’s not really uncommon nowadays anymore due to the internet but it depends on your interests, your job, hobbies etc. For academic people fluent English should be fairly usual, for the common worker it’s rather not. I’ve never been to the US or UK even and due to political reasons I’m not horribly interested.
Out of curiosity, would you kill a 26 year old woman flirting with your dear 20 year old son? I mean even you still depend on your parents financially there are limits as to how far they may interfere with your life. This has certainly changed during the last decades and still isn’t the case all over the world. It may even differ from family to family. Nonetheless, trying to decide whether someone is a good partner for your child can get you in deep trouble. I’d even think a mature grown-up is less dangerous for your precious child than a less inexperienced, possibly immature person of the same age. Anyway, if you have the chance to talk to the person face to face, I doubt you’d depend your blessing on the age.
